Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used as a tool for activism. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of artwork. Even though DuVernay lived within Compton with her family she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the waste belonging to one of the jury. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of high school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
